Why self-employed evidence can differ
Income can vary by month or year, and a provider may need enough information to understand what is sustainable. The provider chooses what evidence is proportionate to the application; Nationwide Motor Finance does not promise that one document guarantees acceptance.
Describe your employment status and income accurately. If you trade through a limited company, are a sole trader or combine employment and self-employment, make that clear rather than selecting the closest-looking answer.
Documents worth preparing
HMRC explains that an SA302 can provide evidence of earnings for the previous four years after a Self Assessment return has been filed. A provider may instead or additionally request tax-year overviews, bank statements, accounts or an accountant's information.
Requirements vary. Do not alter documents or omit material information, and provide only the records requested through a secure, authorised route.
- Photo identification and current address evidence
- Recent business and personal bank statements if requested
- SA302 tax calculations and tax-year overviews
- Finalised accounts or accountant information where applicable
- Details of regular personal commitments
Build a sustainable vehicle budget
Use income that can reasonably be evidenced and allow for quieter trading months, tax, essential household costs and existing credit. Add insurance, tax, fuel, servicing, tyres and repairs before choosing a monthly finance amount.
The lender must make its own creditworthiness and affordability assessment. A website illustration or complete document pack is not an approval or guaranteed rate.
Apply once the information is consistent
Check names, addresses, dates and income figures before submission. Inconsistency can lead to questions or delays, while repeated formal applications can add searches to a credit file.
The initial Nationwide Motor Finance website enquiry does not search your credit file. Any later provider search and consent should be explained before it happens.
