01

Identity and address

A provider needs to confirm who is applying and where they live. You may be asked for a full or provisional UK driving licence, address history and evidence such as a recent utility bill, council-tax letter or bank statement.

Make sure names, dates of birth and addresses are consistent. Small differences can delay identity checks or create questions that need to be resolved.

02

Income and affordability

Providers assess whether repayments appear affordable alongside normal commitments. Depending on employment status, evidence may include payslips, bank statements, benefit statements, pension information, tax calculations or business records.

Only provide accurate, current figures. An affordability assessment is intended to protect both the customer and provider; a higher stated income is not helpful if it cannot be verified.

  • Employment and employer details
  • Monthly income after tax
  • Regular housing and credit commitments
  • Deposit or part-exchange information
03

Bank and vehicle details

A provider may require bank details for payments and may use bank statements to verify income or expenditure. The dealership also supplies information about the chosen vehicle, such as registration, price, mileage and age.

Do not send sensitive documents by an unverified route. The initial Nationwide Motor Finance form asks for qualification details, not uploads. The team will explain any later document process if you choose to continue.

Helpful answers

Questions about documents needed for car finance.

Do I need a driving licence?

Provider requirements vary, but many ask for a full or provisional UK driving licence for identity and eligibility checks.

Do self-employed applicants need different evidence?

They may be asked for tax calculations, accounts or bank statements instead of, or as well as, payslips.

Does this website require document uploads?

No. The initial on-site enquiry does not request uploads. Any later document process will be explained before you provide files.

Will documents guarantee approval?

No. Complete documents can support an assessment, but the lender still decides based on status, affordability and its criteria.
