Credit-search guide

Know what type of search may happen before you agree to it.

A soft search and hard search are not the same. The website enquiry does neither; if you later continue with a provider, the type and purpose of any search should be explained first.

What a soft search is

A soft credit search can be used for identity checks, eligibility screening or quotation activity. It may appear on your credit file for you to see but is generally not visible to other lenders as a credit application search.

A soft-search result is not a guarantee of approval. A provider may still need more information and a hard search before entering into an agreement.

02

What a hard search is

A hard search is normally associated with a formal credit application and can be visible to other lenders. Several hard searches over a short period may affect how future applications are assessed.

Before proceeding, check which organisation will search your file, whether the search is soft or hard and at what stage it will happen. Only provide accurate information and avoid repeated applications you do not understand.

What this website does

The Nationwide Motor Finance calculator and on-site enquiry do not search your credit file. They send information to our credit-broker team so we can discuss a vehicle, budget and possible next steps.

If you choose to continue with a provider later, the relevant process, privacy information and consent should be presented before any search takes place.
