1. Set the whole-car budget

Work from a monthly amount that remains manageable after housing, food, utilities, existing credit and a sensible buffer. Add insurance, tax, fuel, servicing, tyres and repairs before deciding what can be spent on finance.

The website calculator is an illustration, not an affordability assessment or quote. A provider completes its own checks and may offer different terms or decline the application.

  • Cash deposit or part exchange
  • Monthly finance payment
  • Insurance and vehicle tax
  • Fuel or charging
  • Servicing, tyres and repairs

2. Choose a real vehicle and inspect it

Compare cars that are currently available rather than applying for an undefined loan. Check mileage, service information, MOT history, condition, supplied keys, insurance and whether the vehicle suits the intended journeys.

Nationwide Motor Finance connects the selected stock vehicle to the enquiry so the team can discuss a real transaction. Availability still needs to be confirmed before any agreement.

3. Compare the complete finance illustration

Read the vehicle price, deposit, amount of credit, APR, number of payments, fees, total charge for credit and total amount payable together. A lower monthly payment over a longer term can cost more overall.

Representative APR is an advertising measure, not a guaranteed personal rate. The final APR, deposit and term depend on the applicant, vehicle, affordability and provider criteria.

4. Apply accurately and review the decision

Provide accurate identity, address, employment, income and expenditure details. The provider may need documents and credit-reference checks; the type and purpose of any search should be explained before consent is given.

Before signing, read the pre-contract information and agreement. Check ownership, early settlement, missed-payment consequences, commission disclosure and who to contact if circumstances change.

Helpful answers

Questions about how to finance a used car.

Can I finance a used car online?

You can submit an online application, but finance is not guaranteed. The provider still assesses the applicant, vehicle, affordability and its criteria.

Should I choose the car before applying?

Starting with a real vehicle can make the enquiry more specific, but availability and vehicle eligibility must still be confirmed.

Is the monthly illustration a quote?

No. It is a mathematical illustration. The provider's actual APR, deposit, term, fees and payment may differ.

Who makes the finance decision?

The relevant finance provider makes the decision after its checks. Nationwide Motor Finance acts as a credit broker, not a lender.
